These instructions apply to most surgical procedures in the mouth cavity such as wisdom tooth extraction, apicoectomy, cystoctomy, impants and others.
- In the day of the surgery and the next day as well, follow the following instructions. Apply a cool ice-pack or ice cubes wrapped in a small towel outside the face for 20 minutes, take a 10 minute break, and resume again.
- As soon as you came home, gently remove the gauze and if some bleeding occurs place another one and bite down on the gauze for the next 30-40 minutes. BE AWARE: some bleeding is normal and to be expected.
- As soon as you feel the anesthetic wearing off, take your pain reliever and continue taking it every 4-6 hours for the next 2-3 days. Also, take your prescribed antibiotics every 6-8 hours. All medicine should be taken 10-15 minutes after eating.
- Do not smoke or spit for the next 24 hours.
- For the next 3-7 days you can only eat soft or liquid foods.
- You should expect pain, difficulty in opening the mouth and facial swelling. BE AWARE: swelling usually increases in 3 days following surgery and subsides between 7-14 days.
- Start rinsing your mouth with warm, salty water next day after surgery.
